Pro Stocks Race 'Till The Final Turn

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

Betty Bread presented a Brighton Automotive Pro Stock race that came down to the final turn on the 1/3 mile clay oval at Brighton Speedway on August 22nd. With only 155 points separating the top 3 drivers in the class, everyone’s eyes were watching Kraig Handley (#91), Caley Weese (#77) and Doug Anderson (#72), who were sitting in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places before the night got started.

Handley started on the outside pole and ran a clean, smooth line that had Anderson and Weese sneaking up on him throughout the first 18 laps. On the 19th and 20th laps both got up close, when Anderson got loose coming out of turn 4 on the final lap, leaving room for 6th place Corey Earl (#11) to get by him, and Weese to get closer to Handley.

At the flag stand, with the crowd on their feet roaring for a photo finish, it was the 2008 Division Champion, Handley, that took the coveted checker. Caley Weese finished second, after one of her most aggressive races of the season, and was deemed the August 22nd Campbellford Chrysler Driver of the Week.

“I had so much fun out there tonight,” said Caley following the event. “With the slight rain delay earlier in the night I had no idea how the track surface would be. I was glad that it became tacky enough to really bite and allow us to do what we all love to do on a Saturday Night,..race. I have never been Driver of the Week, and it is great to be recognized for my attempt at the checker. Congratulations goes to Kraig, and I know I won’t be in his rear view mirror for long!!”

Congratulations also go out to other Feature Winners on the night, Warren Mowat of Trenton in his #46 Picture This Pure Stock, Roger Croft of Shannonville in his #08 Bill’s Johns Comp 4, Andy Fletcher of Brighton in his #42 Quinte Towing Stinger, #57Charlie Sandercock, of Trenton, in his Bainer’s Radiator Canadian Modified and rookie Russel Henry who drove the #69 in the Canadian Modified Mechanics Race.

The next race event will be the PartSource Presentation of the Fab Four and includes the Gord's Water Vantastics, Spectator One on One Racing & the Hotch's Auto Parts 30 Lap Enduro . Green Flag flies at 7pm on August 29th. The 10 Pin Enduro Car Bowling Event, which was cancelled due to rain, has been added to the Sunday program of the Labour Day Classic Weekend schedule.
